Electricity, the lifeblood of modern civilization, travels at the astounding speed of light — approximately 186,000 miles per second. In perspective, it’s fast enough to orbit the Earth seven times in just one second. As an electrician based in Cincinnati, I’ve had the privilege to harness this incredible force on numerous projects, ranging from prestigious venues like the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and Cincinnati Art Center to critical infrastructure such as the University of Cincinnati dormitory addition.

My name is Damon Bernath, and I’ve been threading the veins of our city with power for over a decade. Through my experiences, I’ve learned the technical skills required to manage electricity safely and appreciated this trade’s rich history and evolution.

A Spark from the Past

The journey of electricians can be traced back to pioneers like Benjamin Franklin, whose famous experiment with a kite and a key in a thunderstorm proved that lightning was indeed a form of electricity. While Franklin never got struck by lightning, his daring experiment laid the groundwork for understanding and utilizing electricity, setting the stage for future innovations.

The Path to Mastery

Becoming a master electrician is no small feat. It requires a commitment similar to becoming a doctor — up to eight years of rigorous training. An aspiring electrician begins as an apprentice, learning under the guidance of a journeyman for about four to five years. This stage is crucial as it combines formal education with hands-on experience, allowing the apprentice to understand electrical work’s theoretical and practical aspects.

The journey continues under a master electrician for another three years. Only after successfully navigating these intensive years of training and passing a comprehensive exam can one claim the title of a master electrician.

Challenging the Status Quo

Despite the advancements in the field, the electrical trade remains largely male-dominated. Women constitute only about 4.7% of electrical apprentices in the United States. This stark disparity highlights the need for increased efforts to diversify the trade. Encouraging more women to enter this field enriches the pool of talent. It fosters a more inclusive and innovative working environment.

The Power of Mentorship

In my journey, the role of mentors has been invaluable. Joining a union gave me access to a network of experienced professionals eager to share their knowledge and insights. This mentorship has been a cornerstone of my career, helping me navigate complex projects and refine my skills. I cannot overstate the importance of finding a good mentor for those aspiring to enter this field. They can provide guidance, support, and advocacy that are crucial during the formative years of your career.

Electrifying the Future

Looking ahead, the future of electricity and the role of electricians are set to become even more significant. With the push towards renewable energy sources and the increasing complexity of electrical systems in intelligent buildings and cities, the demand for skilled electricians is expected to grow.

For those considering a career as an electrician, you are looking at a profession that is both essential and evolving. It’s a career that lets you bring light into people’s lives, powering everything from the smallest household appliance to the most significant industrial machines. And just like electricity, the opportunities in this field move fast — very fast.

So, if you’re ready to start a career that moves at the speed of light, consider becoming an electrician. It’s a path that offers a stable and rewarding career and the chance to be part of a legacy that lights up the world.
